SQL Training
SQL Courses Sydney - On Site group training or virtual workshops for businesses
SQL Training
Our SQL courses will teach you how to work with relational databases using SQL, helping you extract, analyse, and understand complex data effectively. Intro to advanced level training available.
Duration
1 Day (each)
Prerequisites
Participants should have basic computer skills and a general understanding of data concepts. No prior experience with SQL or databases is required, making this course suitable for beginners looking to develop foundational skills in database management and querying.
Quick Glance
SQL Training: Introduction
This introductory course is suitable for those with little or no prior understanding of relational databases.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Identify key features of effective and ineffective database design in the context of SQL and apply best practices in your own database designs
Analyse database structures to determine the appropriate SQL needed to resolve queries
Select and use suitable SQL clauses to construct accurate queries
Write SQL queries to extract specific information from a database
Interpret SQL queries to understand the results they generate
Introduction to Relational Databases
Purpose and role of Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS)
The role of RDBMS in modern information systems
Understanding the relational model metaphor
Business Rules & Database Design
Interpreting business narratives to identify rules
Simplifying business rules for use in database structures
Identifying entities, attributes, and relationships
Principles of Normalisation
What is database normalisation?
Storing facts in a single place
Creating relationships between data points
Understanding cardinality and its natural forms in business contexts
Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs)
Introduction to ERDs and their symbols
Expressing business rules using ERDs
Using primary and foreign keys, data types, and constraints
Designing an ERD from a business scenario
Implementing a Database in SQL
Creating tables and defining columns
Setting primary and foreign keys
Establishing relationships between tables
Applying constraints and data types
Querying with SQL
- Writing
SELECTstatements to retrieve data - Aliasing columns and deriving new values
- Using arithmetic, functions, and concatenation in queries
- Filtering data with
WHEREclauses and boolean conditions - Applying logical operators (
AND,OR) with precedence and brackets - Sorting results with
ORDER BY, including nested sorts
Understanding SQL Execution
- The purpose and function of SQL clauses (
SELECT,FROM,WHERE,ORDER BY) - Logical vs written order of SQL execution
- Interpreting SQL queries by analysing each clause’s input and output
SQL Intermediate Training
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Build on the SQL clauses introduced in our intro level course
Use additional clauses in SQL SELECT statements, understanding their purpose, input/output, and execution order
Retrieve data from multiple tables and table expressions using the FROM clause
Perform various calculations, including subtotals and grand totals
Write INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements to add, modify, and remove data from tables
Tackle more complex queries by using the results of one SQL statement within another
Create tables and columns with appropriate constraints
Begin scripting basics in preparation for developing stored procedures, views, functions, and triggers (covered in SQL: Level 2b).
Our SQL intermediate course will show you how to extract and change data in relational databases with SQL (Structured Query Language) that traverses multiple tables with Select, Insert, Update and Delete statements, functions and scripts.

SQL Advanced Training
Our advanced SQL course is aimed at extending your knowledge of SQL beyond our intermediate level workshop, exposing you to useful structures in relational database management systems from which to run your code (Triggers, Stored Procedures, Table Valued Functions, Views, User Defined Functions). This course builds on your knowledge of SQL gained in intermediate level and can be customised to your own data.
